DP World further consolidates Dubai cargo handling at Jebel Ali

Global marine terminal operator DP World today announces that in response to customer requests it is moving its general and non-containerised cargo handling operations at Port Rashid in central Dubai to its flagship facility at nearby Jebel Ali.

Following requests from container shipping lines to move to the brand new container terminal at Jebel Ali opened in the third quarter of last year, most of the containerised cargo handled at Port Rashid has already moved to DP World's flagship terminal.

Dubai: On the Middle East's maritime map, the 30-year-old Port of Jebel Ali occupies an iconic position.

The port's role in the emirate's development as a business hub says much about Dubai's ability to think ahead of the times.

Almost three decades after the mega-port was completed, there has been no letup in Dubai's efforts to maintain its hub position in the regional maritime business.

Dubai’s Port Rashid container terminal has begun shifting part of its machinery to Jebel Ali port ahead of the terminal’s closure, said a senior official.

Jamal Mubarak Al Shamsi, Director of Port Rashid Container Terminal, who is co-ordinating the moving process, revealed that some container handling equipment, such as gantry cranes, had already been moved to the newly constructed Terminal 2 of Jebel Ali port. A number of staff had also moved there.
